Impervian Community Spotlight: Mayur Palanichamy, Database Security Specialist, IHiS Singapore

Imperva’s cybersecurity solutions help secure millions of patient data records in Singapore.

Singapore’s Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS) is an IT provider powering the island nation’s digital healthcare strategy and architecture. The multi-award-winning tech agency digitizes, connectors, and analyzes patient data for users in 14 public hospitals.

Managing and analyzing patient data to deliver actionable insight for the island’s growing population is not easy. IHiS depends on database security specialists like Mayur to secure patient data using the latest Imperva DAM technology.

With Imperva as its security partner, IHiS is able to offer its security engineers granular oversight over the organization’s relational databases, mainframes, and file repositories. Mayur’s capabilities keep patient data accessible and accurate.

Mayur Palanichamy: Oracle Expert Turned Cybersecurity Pro

Oracle database administration dominates the vast majority of Mayur’s professional history. As a trained IT graduate, he obtained competency as an Oracle Certified Professional, working with Oracle 10g, 11g, 12c, RAC, Dataguard, Exadata, and GoldenGate technologies. He also developed core competencies in MSSQL and Sybase.

Before working for IHiS, he was a service delivery specialist for IBM’s Kuala Lumpur campus and worked as an Oracle Database Administrator in his Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu in South India.

When IHiS leadership decided to implement Imperva DAM technology to protect patient records, Mayur was one of the first picks for the role. His experience helped give the team the background they needed to implement the new tool in IHiS workflows.

Asked what the most satisfying moment of his career is, he recalls a moment when the team went live on more than 220 servers. After a year of effort, the final result culminated in profound success.

Mayur’s experience in the world of healthcare cybersecurity and Oracle database administration gives him a unique perspective on the challenges that the cybersecurity industry faces. He cites the increased complexity of IT systems with creating new loophole opportunities for cybercriminals and explains there is a constant need to be two steps ahead of every development in the security space.

He is also broadly encouraging to young professionals looking to get a foot into the IT and healthcare industries. Data security, he says, is often overlooked by newcomers, yet it is both challenging and highly rewarding, making it a great pick for the next generation of IT specialists.

Over the next three to five years, Mayur plans on improving his cybersecurity skillset and cultivating new proficiencies in Imperva’s DAM product. His first piece of advice for anyone learning how to use a new tool is to learn the basics properly and practice frequently.

Outside of work, Mayur is a talented bowler – he even won an award for the best male bowling champion in 2017. His other awards include the IBM Manager’s Choice Award, which he held for three consecutive years while working in Kuala Lumpur.
